Hedwig Dances ‘marks’ territory at Links Hall

Nothing is certain when running a dance company, however Jan Bartoszek’s aesthetic consistency combined with loyal company members and an international foothold in Cuba have created a niche that Hedwig Dances owns alone. On the heels of a tour to Havana this March, Hedwig presents a two-weekend smorgasbord of recent works in its spring program, ‘Markings,’ at Links Hall.

River North on the Landmark Stage

Saturday, I go out to play croons Eva Cassidy’s smoky voice in the intimate Katten-Landau studio at Roosevelt University. Dancers Jessica Wolfrum and Ahmad Simmons tangle in an intense, physical, emotive duet – an excerpt from River North Dance Chicago artistic director Frank Chaves’ 2013 ode to the singer. At the end of the second run, Wolfrum literally leans on two lucky audience members, spent. Her character “has issues,” Chaves quips.

Reggie Wilson’s ‘Moses(es)’ supposes(es) gloriously

The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago closed its 40th season with powerful performances by Reggie Wilson and his Fist & Heel Performance Group. Wilson’s Moses(es) has been nearly three years in the making, beginning with presenting partners The Dance Center and The Joyce Foundation co-commissioning the work. It’s been an epic journey for Wilson to make the work, involving multiple residencies across the country and creative partnerships with dramaturge Susan Manning and Mathematician Jesse Wolfson.

Edward Gorey Meets Shostakovich in Trey McIntyre Project

For someone who had no stomach for “happy nonsense,” only the darkly-twisted variety , Edward Gorey couldn’t have a better name. The Trey McIntyre Project has flown into town, literally on the wings of Gorey’s creepy Victorian and Edwardian-era creatures, for the Chicago premiere of The Vinegar Works: Four Dances of Moral Instruction, commissioned by The Harris Theater.

Giordano Dance Chicago Sings

Live vocal and instrumental music lit a fire in a company that was already cooking, in Giordano Dance Chicago’s eclectic spring season this past weekend. The dancers’ keen musicality and connection to the music sparkled throughout the concert of past repertoire and new work.

Leopold Group and Space/Movement Project

The Leopold Group and The Space/Movement Project have a lot in common, but are nothing alike. Both are nine-year-old dance companies made entirely of women, experiencing a somewhat recent significant turnover of dancers. In many ways, seeing different faces has revitalized the two companies, who came together for a shared weekend surrounding the theme of watching called Witness.
