Real Connections: Films.Dance launch brings awareness of our mutualities with people, place and things

By the time I began writing this review I’d probably seen “Kaduna” 20 times. I watch it before I go to bed, when my son takes a nap or when I simply want to feel something. As I mold emotions to form, I smile. The marriage of movement and film is the formal union about which I’m most excited these peculiar days.

Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell will be the next director of Hubbard Street

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago (HSDC) announced today that former company member Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell will take over as artistic director on March 1.

Fisher-Harrell trained at Baltimore School for the Arts and The Juilliard School. Performance credits include HSDC and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, dancing in works by Ron K. Brown, Alonzo King, Lar Lubovitch and Ulysses Dove, to name a few. Since 2005, she has remained focused on education, taking on teaching roles at Towson University and the Baltimore School for the Arts, and as director of Ailey Camp Baltimore.

Chicago dance has had a long love affair with process. Doubling down, are their audiences on board?

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited park in the country, with more than 520,000 acres and 800 miles of hiking trails. With endless possibilities to explore, most visitors don’t venture more than a mile inside the park. Many don’t get out of their cars.

Art, joy and care for the dancer have been costumer Rebecca Shouse's top priorities

This is a love story. A romantic love, a love of design, a love of theater, of dance, of people, of Chicago — and a city’s love for a woman who has dedicated her life to enhancing the fabric of its arts and theater scene one stitch at a time. Rebecca (Becca) Shouse, actor, designer, costumer and caretaker, reflects on her career as she moves into a new phase of her life. Although her first love is acting, Shouse is best known in dance circles for her work at the Joffrey Ballet and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago (HSDC).

Third Annual Black History Month Performance Series

As featured in Dance Magazine, the South Chicago Dance Theatre presents its third annual Black History Month Performance series virtually! South Chicago Dance Theatre typically spends February touring its Black History Month themed program to schools around the greater Chicagoland area. This year's program is open to the broader public and features new choreography by the company's Resident Choreographer Kia S. Smith.

Edging Normal

Desmond Richardson, Co-Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Complexions Contemporary Ballet, dances a new work choreographed by Jacob Jonas.  Edging Normal is a metaphorical tale of a man’s struggle to shed his past in order to feel completely free.  Directed by Andre Bato, Edging Normal features music co-composed by visionary Steve Hackman and jazz icon Dave Koz, a nine-time Grammy Award-nominated saxophonist.

More than 150 people from 25 countries came together to 'make something' during the pandemic. The result: Films.Dance

Last spring, a couple of artist friends hopped on a call to brainstorm ways to “make something.” Fast forward almost one year later and that simple conversation has grown into an international series of 15 films and a team of 12 producers, three presenting centers, one magazine and 150 artists whose roles span cinematography, wardrobe, dance, direction, musical composition and choreography. Did I mention these artists are spread across 25 different countries?
