Chicago Dance Breezes Into June

Chicago Dance breezes into June with summer fare for everyone, with lots of don’t miss events, from the avant garde  Pivot Arts Festival (June 3-10) to a free performance of Chicago’s top percussive dance companies in The Grand Finale of Stomping Grounds at Millennium Park’s Pritzker Pavillion (June 7). Hubbard Street’s Season 40 concludes with a full-length evening of Ohad Naharin’s “Minus 16” at the Harris (June 7-10).

CHICAGO DANZTHEATRE ENSEMBLE'S "ART IN RESPONSE”

Last Friday I attended the Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble’s (CDE) production “Art In Response” at their resident space, the Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Andersonville.  Fortunately for me, I’m a person for whom Christian sanctuary spaces brings a certain amount of comfort and nostalgia. These spaces hold resonance and whether you have a positive, negative, or complicated association with church, the feelings are loaded. And that “loaded-ness” has an effect on performance.

Ones to Watch: Dance Shelter 2018

I was back at the Hamlin Park Theatre last weekend for “Dance Shelter 2018” produced by The Chicago Moving Company (CMC). This year featured works-in-progress by CMC artists-in-residence Rachel Bunting/The Humans and Ayako Kato/ Art Union Humanscape as well as a re-staged work by guest artist Emma Draves, and a “re-imagined” piece originally choreographed by CMC founder Nana Shineflug. All-in-all it was a solid evening of post modern dance; no intermission, no muss no fuss.
